Rabbit Vaccines

Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus Type 2 (RHDV2) Vaccine

Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease (RHD) is a severe viral infection caused by the RHDV2 strain of calicivirus, known for its rapid and often fatal progression. RHDV2 affects domestic and wild rabbits, causing high mortality rates. The disease can present suddenly with symptoms including fever, lethargy, and bleeding. Infected rabbits might exhibit signs like difficulty breathing, a lack of appetite, and occasionally, sudden death without prior symptoms.

Once clinical symptoms appear, RHD is nearly always fatal. The virus spreads through contact with contaminated environments, feces, or direct contact with infected rabbits. Immediate veterinary care is crucial if you suspect your rabbit has been exposed to RHDV2.

Vaccination is the most effective measure to protect rabbits from RHDV2. The RHDV2 vaccine is not universally mandated but is highly recommended in areas where RHDV2 is prevalent. Some regions may have specific regulations or recommendations for rabbit vaccination to control the spread of the disease.

An initial vaccine can be given between 10-12 weeks old, 21 days later, and annually thereafter.
