Heartworm Prevention

What is Heartworm Disease?

Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal condition caused by the parasitic worm Dirofilaria immitis. These worms live in the heart, lungs, and blood vessels of affected dogs, leading to severe cardiovascular and pulmonary damage.

How is Heartworm Caught?

Heartworm disease is transmitted through mosquito bites. When a mosquito bites an infected animal, it picks up microfilariae (immature heartworms) which develop into infective larvae. When the mosquito then bites another animal, the larvae enter the bloodstream and mature into adult heartworms.

Symptoms and Treatment

Symptoms of heartworm disease can include coughing, difficulty breathing, lethargy, and weight loss. In severe cases, it can lead to heart failure or death. Treatment involves a series of injections with a drug called melarsomine to kill adult worms, followed by a period of strict rest to allow the body to clear the dead worms. Preventative measures include monthly oral medications like Heartgard and long-term injectable options like Proheart.

Cost Concerns

Preventing heartworm disease is generally much less expensive than treating it. The cost of heartworm preventatives such as Heartgard and Proheart varies, but it is a worthwhile investment compared to the high costs of heartworm treatment and potential emergency care. Regular testing is also recommended to ensure early detection and management.
