Gastropexy

Gastropexy is a surgical procedure designed to prevent gastric torsion, also known as bloat, particularly in deep-chested breeds such as Great Danes, German Shepherds, and Boxers. This condition involves the stomach twisting on itself, which can be life-threatening and requires immediate intervention. Gastropexy involves surgically attaching the stomach to the abdominal wall to prevent it from rotating.

The Procedure

An incision is made in the abdominal wall to access the stomach. The stomach is then positioned correctly and attached to the abdominal wall using sutures or staples. The incision is closed, and your pet will be monitored closely during recovery to ensure proper healing and comfort.

Symptoms Indicating the Need for Gastropexy

  • Abdominal Distension: Noticeable swelling or enlargement of the abdomen.
  • Restlessness: Difficulty finding a comfortable position.
  • Vomiting: Unproductive retching or vomiting.
  • Rapid Breathing: Increased respiratory rate due to discomfort or distress.

Benefits of Gastropexy

  • Prevention of Bloat: Reduces the risk of gastric torsion, a potentially fatal condition.
  • Increased Safety: Provides peace of mind for owners of high-risk breeds.
  • Improved Quality of Life: Reduces anxiety about the possibility of sudden, life-threatening emergencies.

Risks of Not Proceeding with Gastropexy

Delaying or avoiding gastropexy can lead to a high risk of gastric torsion, which can cause severe abdominal pain, shock, and even death if not treated immediately. Without this preventive measure, high-risk breeds remain vulnerable to sudden and life-threatening episodes of bloat, which require emergency surgery and can have serious long-term consequences.
