Cystotomy

What is Cystotomy?

Cystotomy is a surgical procedure performed to address issues within the bladder, such as stones, tumors, or persistent infections. This procedure is often recommended when less invasive treatments have not resolved the problem. Cystotomy involves making an incision into the bladder to remove stones, tumors, or to address other bladder abnormalities. This procedure helps to relieve symptoms and improve bladder function, leading to a better quality of life for your pet.

The Procedure

An incision is made in the abdominal wall to access the bladder. The bladder is then carefully opened, and any stones, tumors, or abnormal tissue is removed. Afterward, the bladder is carefully closed, and the abdominal incision is sutured. Your pet will be monitored closely during recovery to ensure proper healing and comfort.

Symptoms Indicating the Need for Cystotomy

  • Frequent Urination: Increased frequency or urgency of urination.
  • Blood in Urine: Presence of blood or abnormal color in the urine.
  • Straining to Urinate: Difficulty or pain while urinating.
  • Abdominal Pain: Discomfort or swelling in the abdominal area.

Benefits of Cystotomy

  • Relief of Symptoms: Addresses and resolves bladder issues causing discomfort and urinary problems.
  • Improved Bladder Health: Removes obstructions or abnormal growths that can affect bladder function.
  • Enhanced Quality of Life: Reduces pain and improves overall well-being by addressing the root cause of bladder issues.

Risks of Not Proceeding with Cystotomy

Delaying or avoiding cystotomy may lead to worsening of symptoms and progression of underlying conditions. This can result in chronic pain, persistent urinary issues, or more severe complications such as bladder rupture or systemic infection. Without intervention, the quality of life for your pet may significantly decline, and more complex treatments or emergency procedures may become necessary.
