Losing a pet is a profound experience, and we empathize with the difficult choices involved. Our veterinarians approach euthanasia with care, ensuring that it is only recommended when truly necessary for your pet’s well-being.
When considering euthanasia, you are welcome to be present during the process, providing comfort to your pet. We also offer the option of sedation beforehand, ensuring your furry friend feels as little stress as possible. The final injection is a gentle anesthetic, allowing your pet to drift into a peaceful sleep, free from pain.
Determining your pet's quality of life can be challenging. Pay attention to changes in appetite, instances of soiling, and signs of discomfort, such as vocalizations or changes in mobility. Restlessness or difficulty finding a comfortable position may also indicate distress. Additionally, if your pet struggles to maintain independence, especially when alone, it may reflect their overall declining health.
These observations are just guidelines; every pet's situation is unique. It's essential to consider your pet's history, individual needs, and happiness when making this difficult decision.

What happens after euthanasia?
After your pet's passing, you have several options for aftercare. You can choose to take your pet home, arrange for cremation, have them buried through a pet funeral home, or leave them in the care of the veterinarian. We understand that saying goodbye is incredibly challenging, so we recommend planning ahead for aftercare before your visit. There’s no pressure to choose any particular option; select what feels right for you. Some pet owners find comfort in keeping an urn with their pet’s remains, while others prefer the emotional ease of leaving their pet with us. Ultimately, it's your decision.
The grieving process varies for everyone. Some may mourn for only a few days, while others may need months. This is completely normal, and there is no set timeline for what constitutes “enough” mourning.
If you have any questions about the euthanasia process or would like to schedule an appointment to discuss your pet’s condition, please don’t hesitate to contact our office.
When you come in for euthanasia services, we strive to create a comfortable experience. We prepare a private room in advance so you can enter directly. Once you have made your decision, one of our client service representatives will discuss cremation and memorialization options with you.
After you select your aftercare preferences, you are welcome to spend time with your pet before they are sedated. Once your pet is peacefully asleep, the veterinarian will administer the final injection. You can remain with your pet for as long as you need, both before and after the procedure.
While pet parents of cats and dogs can stay throughout the entire service, we regret that this option is not currently available for exotic pets. If you prefer, we can bring your exotic pet back to you afterward, allowing you to take the time you need.
Cremation Options
We have partnered with Trusted Journey - Hinsdale for many years, and they have lovingly cared for numerous pets belonging to our clients and staff.
We offer two cremation options for your pet. Private cremation ensures that your pet's ashes are returned to you in a complimentary urn. Alternatively, memorial cremation is a communal service where ashes are not returned.
Paw Prints
We provide several in-house paw print options and can also coordinate through Hinsdale. Additionally, we’re happy to collect fur and whisker clippings for you as keepsakes.
